CBRN stands for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear — the categories of hazard that demand specialised detection, protection and decontamination. Early, accurate detection is the foundation of an effective response.
Why CBRN detection is different
Unlike everyday industrial hazards, CBRN agents may be deployed deliberately, in unknown combinations, and at very low concentrations. Responders need to identify a threat quickly — often without prior knowledge of what they are facing — while staying protected.
A layered capability
- Chemical: instruments that detect and identify chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals in the field.
- Radiological / Nuclear: detectors and dosimeters that locate radioactive sources and track exposure.
- Biological: screening and sampling tools that help flag and collect suspected biological material for confirmation.
No single device covers every threat. Effective teams combine complementary instruments with the right protective equipment and clear procedures.
Who relies on it
CBRN capability supports defence and paramilitary units, disaster-response and hazmat teams, fire services, and specialised laboratories — anywhere a release could threaten responders and the public. Training and readiness drills are as critical as the equipment.
